Video transitions in Premiere Pro are built-in effects that smoothly connect one clip to the next, and they take only a drag and a drop. This beginner guide shows how to find them, add them between your clips, change their length and direction, and try a few favourites like Wipe, Push and Whip.

Step 1: Open the Effects panel

Look for the Effects panel, usually at the top right or bottom left of your workspace. If you cannot see it, open the Window menu and make sure Effects has a tick next to it. Clicking it brings the panel back.

Step 2: Browse the Video Transitions folder

In the Effects panel, expand Video Transitions. Inside are many folders such as Dissolve, Slide, Wipe and Zoom with plenty of choices. If you want a wipe, expand the Wipe folder and pick any of the transitions in it.

Step 3: Drag the transition between two clips

Click and hold the transition, then drag it onto the cut between two clips on your timeline. Press Space to play it back and you will see the clips blend into each other with your chosen transition.

Step 4: Change the duration

Zoom in on the timeline to make the transition easier to grab. Hover over the corner of the transition, then drag it to extend or shorten it. A longer transition gives a slower, softer animation, while a shorter one feels quick and sharp.

Step 5: Customize it in Effect Controls

Select the transition in the timeline, then open Effect Controls. Click the small arrows around the preview to choose where the transition starts from, and play with the other settings such as Duration, Alignment, Border Width and Reverse until you like the look. These controls are also available on other transitions.

Step 6: Try the Push and Whip transitions

Expand the Slide folder for different styles. Push is fluid and looks good for many cuts. Whip is basically a slide with a motion blur effect, so it looks best when it is quick. Again, select it and adjust the settings or duration in Effect Controls, since small changes make a big difference.
