Step 1: Select the Type tool and type your text

Click the Type Tool in the toolbar, or simply press T on your keyboard. Then click in the Program Monitor, where you want the text to appear, and type your words. A new text layer appears on the track above your video, and the text shows up in the Effect Controls panel too. Press V afterwards to go back to the Selection tool.

Step 2: Choose a font, weight and size

Select the text layer and open the Text options in Effect Controls. Click the font dropdown and pick a font. Every font shows a live sample next to its name, so you can see how it looks before you choose. Below the font you can set the weight, such as Regular or Bold, and drag the size slider until the text fits your frame.

Step 3: Change the case and spacing

Under the font settings there is a row of buttons. Use the All Caps button to turn your text into capital letters, and adjust the alignment and tracking to make it feel more open or tighter. Heavy fonts in all caps work well for titles, while lighter fonts in normal case suit subtitles.

Step 4: Style it with fill, stroke, background and shadow

Scroll down to the Appearance section. Here you can control the Fill color of the text and add a Stroke outline, a Background box and a Shadow. Tick the checkbox next to each one to enable it. Click a color swatch to open the Color Picker and pick your color. A stroke or shadow helps text stay readable on busy footage.

Step 5: Make a gradient color

For a more eye-catching look, click the fill color swatch. In the Color Picker, open the dropdown at the top left, which says Solid, and choose Linear Gradient or Radial Gradient.

A gradient bar appears. Click the small stops under the bar and change their colors to build your gradient. You can adjust the Angle to change the direction. Click OK when it looks right.

Tips

  • Hold Ctrl for fine control. Holding Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) while you resize or move text in the monitor gives you more precise adjustments.
  • Keep it readable. Choose a color that contrasts with the video behind the text.
  • Save a style. Once you like a look, save it as a text style so you can reuse it.
