How to Make a Flutter Cut in Premiere Pro

Make a flutter cut transition in Premiere Pro by slicing the next clip into short pieces and spacing them out over the end of the first clip.

Step 1: Find the cut between your two clips

Place two clips next to each other on the same video track. Move the playhead to the cut between them. Use the Up Arrow or Down Arrow key to jump from one edit point to the next if you have several.

Step 2: Slice the second clip into three short pieces

Press the Right Arrow key three times to move forward 3 frames, then press Ctrl+K (Cmd+K on Mac) to cut. Move forward another 3 frames and cut again. Do this one more time. You now have three tiny pieces at the start of the second clip, each about 3 frames long. Make sure you are cutting the clip itself, with its track selected.

Step 3: Drag the first little clip above the first video

Drag the first short clip up to the track above, so it sits over the end of the first video. Position it a bit away from the cut, so there is room for the other pieces to come after it.

Step 4: Space out the other two clips

Drag the second short clip to the track above too and place it a bit after the first one, leaving a small gap. Then drag the third clip a bit after the second one, again with a small gap, and keep it pretty close to the cut. These gaps are where the original footage shows through, and that back and forth is what creates the flutter.

Step 5: Close the gap and play it back

Finally, drag the second video to the left so it closes the gap and touches the first video. If ripple edit is off, you can also use Ripple Delete on the gap. Play the sequence and the footage now flickers between the old and the new shot before the new one takes over: your flutter cut.

Tips

  • Change the rhythm. Longer gaps feel slower and heavier, shorter gaps feel faster and more nervous.
  • Match the beat. Place the flutter right on a drum hit or accent in your music.
  • Add a sound effect. A quick whoosh or glitch sound sells the cut even more.

FAQ

What is a flutter cut?

A flutter cut is a transition where short pieces of the next clip flash in and out over the current one before the new clip fully starts.

How many frames should each piece be?

The video uses 3 frames per piece. Fewer frames make a quicker flicker and more frames make it easier to see each flash.

Do I need any plugins for this?

No. A flutter cut only needs the razor cut, a second video track and drag and drop in the timeline.
