Step 1: Select your text layer and open Effect Controls

Create your title with the Type Tool and place it on your timeline. A heavy font works best for a gold look, because thick letters leave more room for the gradient to show. The video uses SF Pro Display in Black Italic, but any bold font will do.

Click the text layer on the timeline to select it, then open the Effect Controls panel (Window > Effect Controls, or Shift+5). Click the small arrow to expand the Text section.

Step 2: Open the Fill color

Scroll down inside the Text section until you reach Appearance. You will find Fill, Stroke, Background and Shadow there. Click the white color swatch next to Fill to open the Color Picker.

Step 3: Switch the fill to a Linear Gradient

At the top left of the Color Picker there is a drop-down that says Solid. Open it and choose Linear Gradient. The color bar now shows a gradient with a color stop at each end.

Step 4: Set the first two colors

Click the first color stop, the small square under the left end of the bar, and choose a yellow. Then click the second color stop on the right and pick a more orange color. You can use the color field, or type a hex code if you have a favorite gold.

At this point you have a simple yellow to orange gradient, which already looks warm and golden. The next step is what makes it look like shiny metal.

Step 5: Add more stops for a metallic shine

Real gold has bright highlights and darker areas, so a smooth two-color gradient is a bit flat. Move your cursor to about a quarter of the way along the bar, then click just below it to add a new color stop. Change that stop to an orange color.

Move forward another quarter of the bar, add another stop and set it to yellow. Repeat as needed. You end up with an alternating yellow and orange pattern, and that repeated light and dark band is what creates the metallic look.

Step 6: Adjust the angle and confirm

Below the bar you can change the Angle of the gradient. At 90 degrees the colors run from top to bottom across each letter. Try other angles to see where the highlights land, and pick whatever you like. When you are happy, click OK.

Your text is now gold. Because the gradient is part of the text fill, you can still edit the words, change the font or move the title and the gold stays applied.

If you would like a different colorful gradient, our rainbow text tutorial uses another method that also lets you animate the colors.

Tips

  • Add contrast behind it. Gold looks best on dark or blue backgrounds, where the yellow and orange stand out.
  • Use more stops for more shine. Short, closely spaced bands look like polished metal, while long bands look softer.
  • Try a subtle shadow. The Shadow option in Appearance adds depth, so the text sits above the picture.

FAQ

Can I make silver or other metallic text the same way?

Yes. Use the same Linear Gradient approach with alternating light and dark grays for silver, or light and dark browns for bronze.

Does the gradient work on any font?

It works on any text layer you create in Premiere Pro. Bold and wide fonts show the gradient best, while thin fonts leave little surface to color.

Why can I not see the Fill color option?

Make sure the text layer is selected, then expand the Text section in Effect Controls and scroll down to Appearance. If Effect Controls itself is missing, reopen it from Window > Effect Controls.
