Step 1: Find the flip effects

Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects) and type flip into the search box. Under Video Effects > Transform you will find two effects: Horizontal Flip and Vertical Flip. You can ignore Flip Over under the obsolete transitions, which is a different effect.

Step 2: Choose horizontal or vertical

Which one you need depends on the result you want. Here is the original clip, a rally car driving along a dirt road.

Horizontal Flip mirrors the picture left to right, so the car now drives the other way and any text becomes mirrored. Vertical Flip turns the picture upside down, as you can see below. Use the horizontal one to correct a mirrored selfie or to change the direction of movement, and the vertical one for creative upside down shots.

Step 3: Apply the effect to your clip

Drag the effect you want onto your video clip in the timeline, or select the clip and double click the effect. You can use either one or both together. Using both flips the picture in both directions, which looks the same as rotating the clip by 180 degrees. The effects appear in Effect Controls below the Motion and Opacity sections.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Horizontal Flip and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX

Step 4: Undo the flip

To go back to the original picture, select the clip, open Effect Controls, click the flip effect's name and press Delete. You can also click the small fx toggle next to the effect to switch it off temporarily and compare the result.

Tips

  • Watch out for text and logos. A flip mirrors everything in the picture, including signs and shirts, so check the shot before you use it.
  • Flip only part of a sequence. Cut the clip with the razor tool first, then apply the effect to just the piece you want.
  • Use an adjustment layer for many clips. Put the effect on an adjustment layer to flip everything below it in one go.
