Step 1: Draw the switch body

Choose the Rectangle Tool from the toolbar, then click and drag in the Program Monitor to draw a rectangle. Keep the shape layer selected and open Window > Essential Graphics if the panel is not visible. Click the Edit tab.

Step 2: Round the corners

In Essential Graphics, find the corner radius value next to the width and height. Increase it all the way to the maximum, which is 1000. The rectangle becomes a pill, which is the body of the switch. Make sure the Fill is a dark gray, like an iPhone switch that is switched off. To change the size, pick the Selection Tool and drag the handles on the shape.

Step 3: Add the white circle

Click the empty gray area of the timeline to deselect the layer. Then click and hold the shape tool in the toolbar and pick the Ellipse Tool. Hold Shift while you drag in the Program Monitor to draw a perfect circle. In Essential Graphics, change the Fill color to white. Use the Selection Tool to move the circle to the left end of the pill and resize it so it fits neatly inside.

Step 4: Animate the circle with Position keyframes

Select the circle layer and open Effect Controls. Move the playhead to the point where the switch should start moving, then click the stopwatch next to Position to create a keyframe. Move forward to the point where the animation should be complete and change the Position value so the circle sits at the other end of the pill. To make it faster, drag the two keyframes closer together.

Step 5: Smooth the movement

A real toggle eases in and out. Select both keyframes, right click one of them and choose Temporal Interpolation > Ease In. Then do the same and choose Ease Out. For more control, click the small arrow next to Position to open the velocity graph. Select the keyframes to get the handles, then shape your own speed curve.

Smoother with EaseFlow: select the keyframes and apply a real easing curve in one click instead of dragging Bezier handles. See EaseFlow

Step 6: Add the Tint effect

Now the switch should turn green when it goes on. Open the Effects panel, search for Tint (under Video Effects > Color Correction) and apply it to the bottom layer, the pill.

Step 7: Keyframe the color

Before you change any color, line up the playhead with your animation. Select the top clip, open Effect Controls and jump to the first keyframe using the arrow next to Position. Then select the bottom layer again and click the stopwatches next to Map Black To and Map White To to create keyframes with the original colors.

Select the circle layer again and move the playhead to the last keyframe. Now go back to the bottom layer and set Map White To to a bright green. Set Map Black To to a darker green. You can choose any other color if you like. Press play and the switch slides over and turns green at the same time.

Tips

  • Group the layers. Nest the pill and the circle so you can move or scale the whole switch as one object.
  • Add a click sound. A tiny click effect when the circle moves makes the animation feel real.
  • Reverse it. Duplicate the nest and flip it to make the switch turn off again.
