Step 1: Create your text

Select the Type Tool (press T), click in the Program Monitor and type your word. Choose a heavy, bold font, since the effect works best on thick letters. Switch to the Selection Tool and place the word where you want it. The tutorial uses a single word on a plain black background so the effect is easy to see.

Step 2: Duplicate the text layer

Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and drag the text clip upward to copy it onto the track above. You will end up with a stack of identical text layers. Each copy will get its own offset later, which is how the repeated words are created.

Step 3: Animate Shift Center To with the Offset effect

Search for Offset in the Effects panel and drag it onto the text. In Effect Controls, click the stopwatch next to Shift Center To to add a keyframe at the start. Move forward in time and change the vertical value of Shift Center To so the text slides up or down, which adds a second keyframe. This vertical slide is the movement that Echo will copy.

Step 4: Add the Echo effect

Search for Echo and apply it above or below Offset. This effect repeats the picture at time offsets, so the moving text leaves a trail of copies. In the video the values are around Echo Time -0.065 seconds, Number of Echoes 5 and Decay 0.70, but you can change these until the spacing and number of copies look right to you.

Step 5: Change the Echo Operator

Open the Echo Operator dropdown. The default is Add, which makes the echoes bright and overlapping. Options include Maximum, Minimum, Screen, Composite In Back, Composite In Front and Blend. In the finished version Minimum is used, which keeps the echoes as clean stacked copies.

Step 6: Copy, paste and ease the keyframes

Once one layer looks right, select the effects, press Ctrl + C and paste them onto the other text layers with Ctrl + V. Then select the keyframes, right-click, go to Temporal Interpolation and choose Ease Out for a soft slide or Hold for a stepped jump.

Tips

  • Use a heavy font. Thin fonts disappear once they are repeated, so a bold typeface keeps every echo readable.
  • Change one value at a time. Echo has many settings, so adjust one, watch the result, then move on.

FAQ

What effects do I need for kinetic typography in Premiere Pro?

This version uses Offset to animate the position and Echo to repeat it, with keyframes on Shift Center To.

How do I make the text echo look cleaner?

Set the Echo Operator to Minimum or another mode instead of Add, and lower the number of echoes if it gets cluttered.

Can I use this on more than one word?

Yes. Paste the same effects onto other text clips and offset their timing. A related effect is our typewriter text effect.
