The quick way: a free typewriter template

If you want the effect without building it yourself, download the free Typewriter Animation Template. It is a Motion Graphics Template (.mogrt) that works in Premiere Pro 2021 and newer.

  1. Download the template and unzip it.
  2. Install the .mogrt file. Follow our guide to installing and customizing MOGRT files if you have not done it before.
  3. Drag the template onto your timeline above your footage.
  4. Type your own text and adjust the look in the template's controls.

Tips for a convincing typewriter effect

  • Match the speed to the mood. Fast typing feels urgent; slower typing feels calm and dramatic.
  • Add a typing sound. Line the keystrokes up with the letters appearing. Our free sound effects pack is a good place to start.
  • Use a monospaced or serif font for a classic typewriter look, or a clean sans-serif for a modern UI feel.
  • Keep lines short so viewers can read along as the text appears.
