How to Make a Morph Cut Transition in Premiere Pro

Add a Morph Cut transition in Premiere Pro, set it to Center at Cut, let it analyze and change its duration for a smooth blend between clips.

Step 1: Find Morph Cut in the Effects panel

Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects) and type Morph Cut into the search box. You will find it under Video Transitions > Dissolve.

Step 2: Drag it between your two clips

Click and drag the Morph Cut transition into the timeline and drop it right on the cut between your two video clips. When it snaps into place you will see a small transition box sitting on the edit point.

Morph Cut works best when both clips are similar in framing and the subject sits in roughly the same place, for example when you remove a mistake from a talking head clip or blend two shots of the same moving subject.

Step 3: Set the alignment to Center at Cut

Click the transition in the timeline and open the Effect Controls panel. Under Alignment, open the drop-down and change it from Start at Cut to Center at Cut. This places the transition evenly on both sides of the edit, so the morph uses a bit of each clip.

Step 4: Let Premiere analyze the clip

As soon as you change the alignment, Premiere starts to analyze the clips automatically. You will see an Analyzing in background banner in the Program Monitor. Wait until it disappears. Once it is done, play the cut back and you will see a smooth, natural morph where the hard cut used to be.

Step 5: Change the duration

You are not stuck with the default length. Click the transition in the timeline, then in Effect Controls change the Duration value. A longer duration gives Premiere more frames to blend, and a shorter one makes the change quicker and sharper.

Changing the duration makes Premiere analyze the clip again, so give it a moment to finish before you play it back.

Tips

  • Keep the camera still. Morph Cut hides small differences, so a locked-off shot gives the cleanest result.
  • Trim first, then add the transition. Make sure your cut is in the right place before you apply Morph Cut, because moving it later means analyzing again.
  • Use it on captions too. The same transition can blend text layers together. See how in our guide to smooth captions in Premiere Pro.

FAQ

Where is the Morph Cut transition in Premiere Pro?

Search for Morph Cut in the Effects panel. It sits in Video Transitions > Dissolve.

Why does Premiere say Analyzing in background?

Morph Cut studies the frames on both sides of the cut to build the morph. It runs in the background, and you can keep editing while it works, but the result only appears once it has finished.

Why does my Morph Cut look strange?

This usually happens when the two clips are too different. Try a shorter duration, move the cut to a calmer moment, or use a different transition for shots that change a lot.
