Step 1: Create and style the text

Create some text with the Type Tool, then resize and reposition it where you want it in the frame. Open the Essential Graphics panel (Window > Essential Graphics if it is not visible) and make sure you are on the Edit tab with the text layer selected.

Step 2: Make the bottom layer stroke only

Scroll down to Appearance and turn off Fill so only the Stroke is enabled. This layer becomes the dark outline that sits behind the hologram.

Step 3: Duplicate the text and keep only the fill

On the timeline, hold Alt (Option on Mac) and drag the text layer up one track to duplicate it. Select the top copy, go back to the Essential Graphics panel and turn Fill on and Stroke off. This step is important for getting the right look, because the top layer will hold the colored hologram lines.

Step 4: Add Venetian Blinds for the scan lines

Open the Effects panel and search for Venetian Blinds. Use the one in the Obsolete folder under Video Effects, not the transition in the Wipe folder. Drag it onto the top text layer.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Venetian Blinds and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX

Step 5: Set up the lines

With the top layer selected, open Effect Controls and set Transition Completion to around 30%. That gives you lines across the text. To make them horizontal, set Direction to 90 degrees. For finer lines or thicker ones, change the Width value until you like how it looks.

Step 6: Add a glow with Gaussian Blur

Now for the glow. Duplicate the top text layer the same way, holding Alt (Option on Mac) and dragging it up. Search for Gaussian Blur in the Effects panel and apply it to the middle text layer. In Effect Controls, raise Blurriness to around 150, or whatever you like. The blurred copy glows behind the sharp lines and finishes the hologram look.

Tips

  • Pick a bright color. Cyan, magenta and green work well, because a glow needs contrast against the background.
  • Animate it in. Keyframe the opacity or scale for a flicker or pop-in. Our glowing text effect tutorial has more ideas for glow.
  • Keep the layer order. Stroke at the bottom, glow in the middle and lines on the top.

FAQ

Where is the Venetian Blinds effect in Premiere Pro?

Search for it in the Effects panel. It is in the Obsolete folder under Video Effects, separate from the Venetian Blinds transition in the Wipe folder.

Why do I need three text layers?

One layer holds the outline, one holds the colored fill with scan lines and one is blurred to create the glow.

Can I use this on any text?

Yes. It works with any font and color, but bold fonts show the scan lines best.
