Step 1: Search for Find Edges

Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects) and type find edges into the search field. The effect you need is Find Edges in Video Effects > Stylize. Ignore the Convolution Kernel preset in the results.

Step 2: Apply Find Edges to your clip

Select your clip on the timeline and double-click Find Edges, or drag it onto the clip. The effect works straight away. Your footage now turns into light line art, with dark lines wherever there are strong edges and a white background elsewhere. That is already a good sketch look.

Step 3: Adjust Invert and Blend With Original

Open the Effect Controls panel and find Find Edges. There are two settings. Tick Invert to flip the look, so the lines turn light on a dark background. For a pencil drawing on white paper, leave it off. Then try Blend With Original. Raising it mixes some of your original footage back into the sketch, which gives a colored pencil or watercolor feel. Keep it at 0 for a pure drawing, or raise it until the color looks the way you want.

Step 4: Make it black and white with Tint

Right now the lines may still carry some color from the footage. To turn the drawing fully black and white, search for tint in the Effects panel. You will find Tint under Video Effects > Color Correction. Apply it to the same clip, and the picture drops to clean black and white. The sketch now looks like pencil on paper.

Step 5: Check the result

Play the clip and look at the finished sketch. If the lines look too faint or too heavy, go back to Find Edges and change Blend With Original, or adjust the brightness of the clip with Lumetri Color. Footage with strong outlines, such as people against a plain background, usually gives the cleanest drawings.

Tips

  • Use sharp footage. Find Edges reacts to detail, so a sharp, well-lit clip gives crisper lines than a soft or noisy one.
  • Reveal it with a wipe. Add the effect to a copy of the clip on the track above and animate a mask or a crop to wipe from normal footage into the sketch.
  • Try a darker paper. Tick Invert for a chalkboard look with light lines on black.
