Step 1: Stack the two videos

Place the video you want to slide in on the track above your other video. In the example, the mountain video is the top layer and slides in over the person on the layer below. Both clips should start at the same point on the timeline.

Step 2: Apply the Transform effect

Open the Effects panel, search for Transform and drag it onto the top video layer. Use the one under Video Effects > Distort. Using this effect instead of the default Motion controls has a big benefit later: you can copy it to other clips.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Transform and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX

Step 3: Keyframe the slide in

Select the top video layer and open Effect Controls. Make sure the playhead is at the start of the clip. Under Transform, click the stopwatch next to Position to create a keyframe. Move forward a bit in the timeline, because that is when the video should arrive, and keep the Position value at its current value. This second keyframe is where the clip ends up.

Now go back to the first keyframe and move the video off the screen in whatever direction you want it to come from. Change the Position values, or drag the video in the Program Monitor. When you play it, the video slides into the frame. To speed it up, drag the second keyframe closer to the first one.

Step 4: Slide the video out

To slide the video out again, move forward to the point where it should start leaving and create a keyframe at the current position. Move forward again to where it should be gone, and change the Position values so the video is off the screen. You can send it out in any direction, not only back where it came from.

Step 5: Smooth the animation

Select the keyframes, right click one of them and choose Temporal Interpolation > Ease In. Then right click again and choose Temporal Interpolation > Ease Out. For even more control, expand the Position settings with the small arrow, click a keyframe to show its handles and drag the handles to shape the speed graph.

Smoother with EaseFlow: select the keyframes and apply a real easing curve in one click instead of dragging Bezier handles. See EaseFlow

Step 6: Add motion blur

For a natural look, add motion blur. In the Transform effect, untick Use Composition's Shutter Angle, then increase Shutter Angle to 360. The video now blurs while it moves, which makes the slide feel faster and smoother.

Step 7: Reuse the animation

Because you used the Transform effect, the animation is easy to reuse. Click Transform in Effect Controls and press Ctrl + C (Cmd + C on Mac). Select a different video or a color matte and press Ctrl + V to paste the whole animation, keyframes included.

Tips

  • Keep the slide short. Half a second is often enough, and a short slide feels snappier.
  • Use a color matte. Paste the animation onto a matte to make a sliding background or lower third.
  • Add a whoosh. A short sound effect makes the movement feel real.
