Step 1: Put your video on the timeline and add text
Drag the video you want to show inside the letters onto the timeline. Choose the Type Tool, click in the Program Monitor and type your text. In the video the word is simply "Text", but use any word you like. The text layer lands on the track above your footage.
Step 2: Choose a thick font
Thick letters show more of the video, so a heavy font works best. Select the text layer and open Effect Controls. Under Source Text, click the font menu and pick a bold typeface. The video uses Impact, which you can find by typing its name in the font search field. Keep the text white.

Step 3: Make the text big
Make the text as large as you can, because the bigger it is, the more of the video shows through. Drag the corner handles in the Program Monitor while holding Ctrl, as shown in the video, to scale the text up. Then center the text in the frame.

Step 4: Apply Track Matte Key to the video
Open the Effects panel and search for Track Matte Key. It is under Video Effects > Keying. Drag it onto the video clip, the one below the text, not onto the text itself.
Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Track Matte Key and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX
Step 5: Pick the text layer as the matte
Select the video clip and look at Track Matte Key in Effect Controls. Open the Matte dropdown, which is set to None, and choose the track that holds your text. In the video, the text is on Video 2. Leave Composite Using on Matte Alpha.

Step 6: Check the result
The video now plays inside the letters, and everything else becomes black. Press the spacebar to play it back. If you would like the text to be visible on a background, put another clip or a color matte on a track below the video layer.

Tips
- Use bold footage. Videos with lots of movement and bright areas look best inside letters.
- Add a background. A blurred copy of the same video under the text makes the effect look richer.
- Related effect. To place text behind a subject instead, see text behind object in Premiere Pro.
