Step 1: Create a black video
In the Project panel, click the New Item button at the bottom and choose Black Video. Click OK to accept the settings, which should match your sequence, then drag the black video onto the timeline. This layer is the base for everything that follows.
One click with Mako: the free Mako panel adds a color matte or solid background in one click, so you can skip the New Item menu. Get Mako for free
Step 2: Add a blue gradient with Ramp
Open the Effects panel, search for Ramp and apply it to the black video. With the layer selected, open Effect Controls. Click the swatch next to Start Color, pick a blue you like and click OK. Do the same for End Color with a different shade of blue. You now have a smooth blue gradient background.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Ramp and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX
Step 3: Draw the grid
Search for Grid in the Effects panel and apply it to the same black video. If you cannot find it, the effect may be hidden in the obsolete effects folder in newer versions of Premiere Pro. In Effect Controls, set Size From to Width Slider, set Width to 100 and Border to 3.
To lay the grid over the gradient instead of replacing it, set the grid's Blending Mode to Normal. Then lower its Opacity to around 60, or whatever looks good to you, so the lines feel less intense.

Step 4: Wobble the lines with Turbulent Displace
Real hand-drawn blueprints are never perfectly straight. Search for Turbulent Displace, apply it to the black video and set Amount to 19 and Size to 6. Try other values if you want more or less wobble.

Step 5: Add a paper texture
The video uses our free Blueprint Paper Texture. Import it and drag it onto the track above the black video. In Effect Controls, scale it up under Motion until it covers the whole frame. Then, under Opacity, change the Blend Mode to Linear Light and lower the Opacity to around 75.

Step 6: Check the final background
Play the clip back to confirm that the gradient, grid and texture work together. Your blueprint background is ready for text, icons and animations. To make it last longer, extend the clips on the timeline.

Tips
- Change the color. Any pair of similar shades in the Ramp works, so the same recipe makes green or dark gray backgrounds.
- Nest it. Nest the black video and texture together so you can reuse the background in other sequences.
- Animate it. Add a slow scale or position keyframe for a subtle drift. See how to ease keyframes in Premiere Pro to make it smooth.
FAQ
Where is the Grid effect in Premiere Pro?
Search for Grid in the Effects panel. If nothing shows up, look in the obsolete effects folder, which holds older effects in newer versions.
What does the Linear Light blend mode do here?
It mixes the paper texture with the colors underneath, so the grain shows through the blue without hiding the grid.
Can I use this background behind text?
Yes. Place your text on a higher track. The grid and texture sit behind it, like a classic blueprint title.
