Step 1: Find the Pitch Shifter effect

Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects) and type pitch shifter into the search field. You will find it under Audio Effects > Time and Pitch > Pitch Shifter.

Step 2: Drag it onto your audio clip

Click and drag Pitch Shifter onto the audio clip of your voice in the timeline. If the voice is part of a video clip, make sure you drop the effect onto the clip that carries the audio, then check that it shows up in the Effect Controls panel when you select the clip.

Step 3: Open the Custom Setup editor

With the audio clip selected, open the Effect Controls panel and expand Pitch Shifter. Next to Custom Setup, click the Edit button. A window called Clip Fx Editor opens with the pitch controls.

Step 4: Drag the Semi-tones slider to the left

In the Pitch Transpose section, drag the Semi-tones slider to the left. Moving it left gives you a negative value, and a negative value lowers the pitch. That is the key to a deeper voice. Press the spacebar to play your clip while the window is open so you can hear the change as you adjust it.

Play around with the slider until you are happy with how it sounds. Small negative values give a gentle, natural deepening. Large negative values sound heavy and robotic, which can be fun for a monster or movie trailer voice.

Step 5: Fine tune with the Cents slider

For smaller adjustments, drag the Cents slider to the left or right. Cents are tiny steps between semitones, so they let you nudge the pitch without a big jump. It is a good way to settle on a voice that sounds deeper but still believable.

Tips

  • Start small. A change of just a few semitones is often enough to make a voice sound richer without sounding fake.
  • Listen on headphones. Pitch changes can add small artifacts that are easier to hear on headphones than on laptop speakers.
  • Clean the audio first. Remove noise and pops before you lower the pitch, because pitch shifting makes problems more obvious. Our plugin roundup covers tools that help.

FAQ

How do I make my voice deeper in Premiere Pro?

Add the Pitch Shifter audio effect to your clip, open Custom Setup, and drag the Semi-tones slider to a negative value.

Can I make my voice higher instead?

Yes. Drag the Semi-tones slider to the right to a positive value to raise the pitch.

Why does my voice sound robotic after pitch shifting?

The shift is too large. Bring the Semi-tones value closer to zero and use the Cents slider for finer changes.
