Step 1: Put the voice clip on the timeline

Drag your voice recording onto an audio track and play it back first, so you know how it sounds normally. You will compare it with the encrypted version in a moment.

Step 2: Apply the Pitch Shifter effect

Open the Effects panel and search for Pitch Shifter. You will find it under Audio Effects > Time and Pitch. Drag it onto the audio clip in the timeline.

Step 3: Open the Custom Setup editor

With the audio clip still selected, open the Effect Controls panel. Under Pitch Shifter, click Edit next to Custom Setup. This opens the Clip Fx Editor, where all the controls for the effect live.

Step 4: Lower the semitones and cents

In the editor, decrease Semi-tones to around -4. Then lower the Cents to whatever you like, the video ends up around -47. Semitones change the pitch in big steps and cents fine tune it between them. Play the audio back and you should hear a voice that sounds a bit encrypted.

Step 5: Try the precision settings

At the bottom of the editor you can switch between Low Precision, Medium Precision and High Precision. Low precision gives a rougher, more robotic sound, which is great for an encrypted feel. Medium and high keep the voice cleaner. Play around with the settings and stop when you are happy with how it sounds.

Tips

  • Go lower for a darker voice. A more negative value sounds heavier and more hidden. Higher values sound lighter and more cartoon-like.
  • Use headphones. Small differences in precision are easier to hear and the effect can hide background noise or reveal it.
  • Add a little background hum. A quiet noise or beep under the voice makes the effect feel more like a secure line.
