Step 1: Put your voice clip on the timeline
Drag your voice recording onto an audio track and select it. A short, clear recording works best, because the effect will exaggerate everything in the sound, including background noise. If your recording is noisy, clean it up first.
Step 2: Apply the Flanger effect
Open the Effects panel and go to Audio Effects > Modulation. You will find Chorus/Flanger and Flanger there. Drag Flanger onto your audio clip.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Flanger and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX
Step 3: Open the Custom Setup editor
With the clip selected, open the Effect Controls panel and find Flanger in the Audio section. Next to Custom Setup, click Edit. This opens the Clip Fx Editor window, where all the real controls live.

Step 4: Set the characteristics
The editor starts with the default Flanger settings. Move the sliders until the voice sounds funny, and listen while you play your clip. The settings used in the video are:
- Stereo Phasing: all the way up to 360°.
- Feedback: around 60%.
- Final Delay Time: around 6 ms.
- Modulation Rate: a high value, so the voice wobbles quickly. Drag it up and listen.

Step 5: Change the mode and the mix
Scroll down in the same window to Mode. Turn on Inverted and Special Effects and leave Sinusoidal off. Then set Mix to around 40%. The Mix slider blends between the dry original voice (0) and the fully effected voice (100), so a lower value keeps the words understandable while still sounding silly.

Step 6: Play it back and adjust
Close the editor and play your clip. If the voice is too hard to understand, lower Mix. If it is not funny enough, raise the Modulation Rate or push Feedback higher. Small changes make big differences, so keep listening as you tweak.
Tips
- Use headphones. Stereo Phasing makes the voice swirl between the left and right ear.
- Apply it to a short clip. Meme voices are strongest for a single line or a reaction, not a whole narration.
- Save your settings. Click the save preset icon in the Clip Fx Editor to reuse the sound on other clips.
FAQ
Where is the Flanger effect in Premiere Pro?
Go to Effects > Audio Effects > Modulation. It sits next to Chorus/Flanger.
Why does my voice sound too distorted?
The Mix value is probably too high. Bring Mix down to around 40% so some of the original voice is still audible.
Can I use this effect on music?
You can, but the settings are tuned for speech. For music, lower the Feedback and Mix for a subtler sweep.
