Step 1: Create a dark gray color matte
Go to the Project panel, click New Item and choose Color Matte. Click OK, then pick a dark gray in the Color Picker and click OK again. Name the matte if you like, then drag it onto the timeline. This matte is the canvas for everything that follows.

One click with Mako: the free Mako panel adds a color matte over the selected clips, at the playhead, on the first free track, in one click. Get Mako for free
Step 2: Add the Grid effect
Open the Effects panel, search for Grid and drag it from Video Effects > Obsolete onto the color matte. With the matte selected, open Effect Controls. Change Size From from Corner Point to Width Slider, then raise the Width value. The video uses around 270, but you can pick any value that gives you the grid size you like.

Now set the Blending Mode of the grid to Overlay and lower its Opacity a bit. The harsh white lines turn into a soft, subtle pattern.
Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Grid and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX
Step 3: Add a color gradient with Ramp
Back in the Effects panel, search for Ramp and apply it to the same color matte. Make sure Ramp Shape is set to Linear Ramp, then increase Blend With Original until the gradient mixes with the grid the way you want. Because the ramp sits below the grid in the effect stack, the lines keep showing through.

If you do not like the white end of the gradient, click the End Color swatch and choose another color, such as blue. You can also move the gradient by changing the Start of Ramp and End of Ramp position values to get a different look. When you change the color, you might want to adjust Blend With Original again.
Step 4: Add noise for texture
Search for Noise in the Effects panel and apply it to the matte. In Effect Controls, increase Amount of Noise to around 5 percent. You can also turn off Use Color Noise if you want grain without colored speckles. This small touch stops the gradient from looking flat and prevents banding.
Step 5: Warp the grid with Turbulent Displace
For the last effect, search for Turbulent Displace and apply it to the same layer. In its settings, set Amount to 20 and Size to 20 as well, or try other values until the lines have a slightly hand-drawn wobble.

Step 6: Animate the wobble
To make the grid move, expand Evolution Options and go to the start of the clip. Click the stopwatch next to Random Seed to set a keyframe. Then move to the end of the clip and increase the value slightly. The grid lines will now shift gently over time. Keep the change small so the movement stays subtle.
Your background is ready. Place your text, graphics or footage on the tracks above it. If you want to ease other animations, see our guide to easing keyframes in Premiere Pro.
Tips
- Keep it subtle. A background should support your content, so low opacity and small turbulence values work best.
- Match your brand. Change the Ramp end color to fit your channel or client colors.
- Make the clip long enough. Extend the color matte to cover your whole scene before you keyframe the Random Seed, so the movement spans the full length.
FAQ
Where is the Grid effect in Premiere Pro?
It is in the Effects panel under Video Effects > Obsolete > Grid. Searching for Grid finds it quickly.
How do I make a grid background in a different color?
Change the Color of the Grid effect or the End Color of the Ramp effect. Both are in Effect Controls.
Can I use this background for text or screen recordings?
Yes. Put the color matte on a lower track and place your text, graphics or footage on the tracks above it.
