Step 1: Create a color matte

Go to the Project panel, click the New Item button and choose Color Matte. Click OK, then pick the color you want your hologram to glow in. The video uses a bright green, but cyan, blue or pink also look great. Click OK again and drag the new color matte onto a track above your video clip.

One click with Mako: the free Mako panel adds a color matte over the selected clips, at the playhead, on the first free track, in one click. Get Mako for free

Step 2: Mask the object you want to highlight

With the matte selected, open Effect Controls and drop Opacity to 0 so you can see your footage through it. Under Opacity, click the Pen tool and draw a mask around the object. Left-click to place each point, and finish by clicking on the first point again to close the shape. Take your time and follow the edges of the object closely.

Once the mask is closed, set Opacity back to 100 so you see the colored matte again, but only inside your mask.

Step 3: Blend the color with Overlay

A solid green blob does not look like a hologram yet. To blend the color with the object underneath, change the Blend Mode of the matte to Overlay. Then lower the Opacity a bit to make it less intense. The video ends up at around 60 percent, but trust your eyes and stop when the object still shows its detail.

Step 4: Add scan lines with Venetian Blinds

Open the Effects panel and search for Venetian Blinds. In the video it sits in the Obsolete folder under Video Effects. Drag it onto the color matte, not onto your footage.

In Effect Controls, set Transition Completion to 30%. You will see stripes appear. To make them horizontal, set Direction to 90 degrees. Then adjust Width to change the size of the lines. Thin lines give a fine scan-line look, thicker lines feel more graphic.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Venetian Blinds and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX

Step 5: Distort the lines with Wave Warp

Search for Wave Warp in the Effects panel and apply it to the color matte as well. Set Wave Height to 1 and Wave Width to around 400. Now play around with the Direction until the wobble lands well on your object. This gives the lines a slightly distorted, unstable look, just like a projected image.

Step 6: Make it flicker with Strobe Light

Search for Strobe Light and apply it to the color matte. In Effect Controls, set the Strobe Color to a lighter or darker shade of your matte color and click OK. Then adjust these values:

  • Blend With Original: around 30 to 40 percent. Choose a lower value if you want a stronger flicker.
  • Strobe Duration: 0.01
  • Strobe Period: 0.02

Step 7: Fade the effect in

Move to the start of the clip and click the stopwatch next to the matte's Opacity to create a keyframe. Then move that keyframe forward a little, because you want the hologram to settle at the opacity you chose in Step 3. Go back to the first frame and set Opacity to 0. The hologram now fades in instead of popping on. Play it back to check the result.

Tips

  • Follow the object. This mask is static. If your object or camera moves, you will need to animate the mask path or use a mask with tracking.
  • Pick one color. A single bright color on a darker scene reads as a hologram much better than several colors.
  • Keep the flicker subtle. A fast strobe looks great but can be tiring to watch, so raise Blend With Original if it feels too harsh.
