Step 1: Shorten your clips by five frames
Select your first clip on the timeline and press Ctrl + R (Cmd + R on a Mac) to open Clip Speed / Duration. Subtract five frames from the current Duration. In the video, the clips are 60 frames long, so the new value is 55. Click OK, then do the same for the second clip, and keep going until every clip is five frames shorter.

Step 2: Close the gaps between the clips
Shortening the clips leaves small black gaps between them. Highlight all the clips, go to Sequence in the top menu and choose Close Gap. Your clips now sit tightly next to each other with no empty space.

Step 3: Add the Transform effect to the first clip
Open the Effects panel and search for Transform. Use the one under Video Effects > Distort and apply it to the first video clip.

Faster with BetterFX: skip the Effects panel. Press your BetterFX shortcut, type the first letters of Transform and press Enter to apply it to the selected clip. Get BetterFX
Step 4: Keyframe Position and Scale
With the clip selected, open Effect Controls and make sure the playhead is at the start of the clip. Click the stopwatch to keyframe Scale and Position. Now change the Position values so the video sits completely off screen, for example far to the side. Then work through the animation:
- Move 4 frames forward and set Scale to around 120.
- Move 2 frames forward and set Scale back to 100.
- At the same point, click the reset button next to Position so the clip lands in the center.
The clip now zooms in slightly as it slides in, and settles at normal size.

Step 5: Ease the keyframes
Select all your keyframes, right-click one and go to Temporal Interpolation > Ease In. Then right-click again and choose Temporal Interpolation > Ease Out. This makes the slide start and stop smoothly instead of moving mechanically.

Smoother with EaseFlow: select the keyframes and apply a real easing curve in one click instead of right-clicking through the menu twice. See EaseFlow
Step 6: Add motion blur
Fast movement looks more natural with motion blur. In the Transform effect, uncheck Use Composition's Shutter Angle and set Shutter Angle to 360. The slide now has a smooth blur while it moves.
Step 7: Copy the transition to all clips
Right-click the Transform effect name in Effect Controls and choose Copy. Highlight all the other clips in the timeline and press Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on a Mac) to paste the attributes. Every clip now has the same slide transition. Play it back and enjoy.
Tips
- Change the direction. Move the start Position up, down or to the other side before you copy, and the slide will come from there.
- Tweak the speed. Move the keyframes closer together for a faster slide.
- Match the music. Cut your clips on the beat, and use these cutting shortcuts to be quicker.
