Step 1: Open Speed/Duration

Right click your audio clip in the timeline and choose Speed/Duration from the menu. You can also select the clip and press Ctrl+R (Cmd+R on a Mac).

Step 2: Set the speed and keep the pitch

In the Clip Speed / Duration window, type the new value into the Speed field. In the video the speed is set to 200%, which cuts the clip length in half. Then tick Maintain Audio Pitch and click OK. Premiere Pro now plays the audio faster while keeping the voice at its original pitch.

That is the quickest method, and it works well for small and medium speed changes. For stronger speed ups, the audio can start to sound a bit artificial, which is where the second method helps.

Step 3: Add the Pitch Shifter effect

The second method lets you correct the pitch by hand. Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects) and search for pitch. You will find Pitch Shifter under Audio Effects > Time and Pitch. Drag it onto your audio clip.

Step 4: Open the Individual Parameters

With the clip selected, open Effect Controls and expand Pitch Shifter. Click the small arrow next to Individual Parameters. You will see a Transpose Ratio value, which starts at 1,00, and a slider below it.

Step 5: Lower the Transpose Ratio

Drag the slider to the left to lower the Transpose Ratio. A value below 1 lowers the pitch, which cancels out the higher pitch that a faster speed creates. In the video the value ends up at 0,67. Play the clip and adjust the slider until the voice sounds natural again.

Tips

  • Start with the checkbox. Try Maintain Audio Pitch first, and only reach for Pitch Shifter if you need more control.
  • Use your ears. Every voice and every speed change sounds a little different, so tune the slider while the clip plays.
  • Clean the audio too. Faster audio makes background noise more obvious, so see our guide to removing background noise in Premiere Pro.
