Step 1: Select the effects you want to save

Select your clip in the timeline and open the Effect Controls panel. Click the effects you want to turn into a preset. To pick several effects at once, hold Ctrl (Cmd on a Mac) and click each one. Everything you select, including its settings and keyframes, will be stored in the preset.

Step 2: Set the keyframe safe zone (text and shapes)

Here is a small tip for presets that contain keyframes. If your keyframes sit at the very beginning or the very end of the clip, you can use the blue handles at the top of the Effect Controls timeline. Drag them to mark the intro and outro as a safe zone, and the keyframes inside will always stay at the start or end, no matter how long the clip is. Premiere Pro shows the Intro Duration as you drag.

These handles are only available on text and shape layers, so skip this step when you are saving a preset from a normal video clip.

Step 3: Right click and choose Save Preset

With the effects still selected, right click on one of them and choose Save Preset from the menu.

Step 4: Name your preset

A Save Preset window opens. Type any name you like and add a description if you want to remember what the preset does. Below that you will see the Type options: Scale, Anchor to In Point and Anchor to Out Point. They decide how the keyframes behave when the preset is applied to clips of a different length. Click OK to save.

Step 5: Find and export your preset

Open the Effects panel (Window > Effects). Your preset sits in the Presets folder, or you can simply type its name into the search box. To apply it, drag it onto a clip like any other effect.

To share it with others or back it up, right click the preset and choose Export Presets. Premiere Pro saves a preset file that you or anyone else can load again with Import Presets. If you want to see how that works, read our guide on importing presets in Premiere Pro.

Tips

  • Use clear names. A name like "Pop in text" is much easier to find later than "Preset 1".
  • Test on another clip. Apply the preset to a clip of a different length to make sure the keyframes behave the way you expect.
  • Back up your presets. Export them from time to time so a reinstall does not wipe out your work.
