Step 1: Check that your clip is linked
Look at your timeline. A linked video clip on a track like V1 and its audio clip on A1 are selected together when you click either one. They are also shown highlighted at the same time. If you drag the video, the audio moves with it, and the other way round. That is what linked means.

Step 2: Right-click and choose Unlink
Select the clip on the timeline and right-click it. In the menu that appears, click Unlink. If the menu shows Link Media instead, the clip is already unlinked.

Step 3: Move the video and audio separately
Now click the video clip on its own and drag it, or select only the audio clip and move that. They no longer follow each other, so you can slide the picture to a different moment, delete only the audio, trim the video without touching the sound or replace the sound with a music track.

Step 4: Use the Ctrl + L shortcut instead
There is a faster way. Select the clip and press Ctrl + L on Windows, or Command + L on a Mac. The shortcut works as a toggle, so if the clip is linked it becomes unlinked, and if it is unlinked it becomes linked again. You can select several clips at once and press the shortcut to unlink them all in one go.

Step 5: Link the clips again when you need to
To put them back together, select both the video clip and the audio clip, then right-click and choose Link Media, or press Ctrl + L (Command + L on Mac) again. Premiere Pro will link them to each other. Be careful if you have moved them out of sync, because they will stay offset by the same amount until you slide one back into place.

Tips
- Select one clip without unlinking. Hold Alt (Option on Mac) while clicking a clip to select only that clip and leave the link intact.
- Watch your sync. After you unlink, moving one clip can put the sound out of sync. Zoom in and check lip movement before you export.
- Check the snapping. Keep snapping on, so clips line up neatly when you drag them back together.
