Step 1: Spot a broken layout

Panels in Premiere Pro are easy to drag, close or resize by accident. A tiny slip and your Timeline is gone, the Effects panel takes up half the screen or the Program Monitor is empty. In the video the Effects panel has swallowed the middle of the workspace and the editing panels are nowhere to be seen.

You could close and reopen each panel by hand, but that takes a while and rarely puts everything back exactly where it was. The reset command does it for you.

Step 2: Use the Window menu to reset to the saved layout

Open the Window menu at the top of Premiere Pro and hover over Workspaces. A list of your workspaces opens, such as Assembly, Color, Editing and Effects, with a check mark next to the one you are using. At the bottom of the list, click Reset to Saved Layout.

Premiere now puts every panel back where it was when you last saved the current workspace. The Timeline, the monitors, the Project panel and Effect Controls all return in one go.

Step 3: Reset with the keyboard shortcut

You will probably need this again, so learn the shortcut. On Windows press Alt+Shift+0. On a Mac press Option+Shift+0. You can see the same shortcut printed next to Reset to Saved Layout in the menu.

Make sure the right workspace is active before you reset, because the command restores the layout of whichever workspace is selected. If you were in the Editing workspace, you get the Editing layout back.

Step 4: Check your result and save changes if needed

After the reset your workspace should look clean and familiar again. If you want a different arrangement to become your new default, move the panels the way you like, then choose Window > Workspaces > Save Changes to this Workspace. From then on, Reset to Saved Layout returns to your new arrangement instead of the old one.

If you prefer to keep several layouts, use Save as New Workspace and give it a name. It then shows up in the same list next to the built-in workspaces.

Tips

  • Reset before you panic. If a panel seems to be missing, try the reset first. Most "lost" panels are only hidden or docked somewhere unexpected.
  • Find a closed panel in the Window menu. Panels with a check mark are open. Click an unchecked name such as Effects or Effect Controls to bring it back.
  • Save after you customize. Reset only returns to what was last saved, so save your changes once you have a layout you like.
