Step 1: Right-click a clip and choose a label
Right-click a clip on the timeline and go to Label. A list of label colors opens next to the menu, with names like Violet, Caribbean, Mango, Rose and Yellow. Click the one you want and the clip changes color straight away.

Step 2: Recolor several clips at once
You do not have to do this one clip at a time. Drag a selection box around several clips, or hold Shift and left-click each clip you want. Then right-click one of them, choose Label and pick a color. Every selected clip changes together, which is a quick way to color-code B-roll, interviews or music.
Step 3: Open the Label preferences
The newest versions of Premiere Pro show clip colors more strongly, so you may want to adjust the labels themselves. Go to Edit > Preferences > Labels (on Mac, Premiere Pro > Settings > Labels). You will see a list of all the label colors in your project.

Step 4: Change a label color and rename it
Click the color swatch next to a label to open the Color Picker. Choose the new color, then click OK. You can also click the name field and rename the label, for example from Violet to Interview, so the name tells you what the color means. Repeat this for every label you want to change.

Step 5: Set default label colors for each media type
On the right side of the same window, under Label Defaults, you can choose which color Premiere Pro gives new clips automatically: Movie (audio and video), Video, Audio, Still, Sequence, Bin and Captions. Set these once and you will not have to label every clip by hand. Click OK to confirm, then go back to the timeline and right-click a clip to apply a different label whenever you want.

Step 6: Revert or use a color preset
If you want your original colors back, click the Revert button at the bottom of the Labels page and confirm. Next to it, the Label Color Presets drop-down offers ready-made sets such as Default, Classic, Vibrant and Editorial, or you can build an entirely custom set and save it.

Tips
- Give colors a job. Pick one color for interviews, one for B-roll and one for music, and keep it the same in every project.
- Save a custom preset. Once you have a label set you like, save it so you can load it in any new project.
- Label in the Project panel too. The same right-click Label menu works on clips in your bins.
FAQ
Does changing the label color change the video itself?
No. Label colors only change how clips look in the Project panel and timeline. Your footage and exported video are not affected. To change how the picture looks, use color tools and effects instead.
Why are all my new clips the same color?
Premiere Pro assigns a default label color to each media type. You can change these under Label Defaults in the Labels preferences.
Can I rename label colors?
Yes. In the Labels preferences, click the name next to any color and type a new one, such as Interview or Music.
