The short answer
The best effect search plugin for Premiere Pro is BetterFX. One shortcut opens a search bar over your timeline, a few letters find the effect, and Enter applies it to every selected clip.
It searches built-in effects, your own presets and third-party effects in one place, learns what you use most, and runs on Mac and Windows for $29.99 one-time with lifetime updates.

What makes BetterFX the best effect search plugin
A great effect search plugin should feel invisible: press a key, type, done. BetterFX was designed around exactly that, and editors rate it 4.92 out of 5.
- Search that understands you. Type a name, an abbreviation or a few remembered letters. gb brings up Gaussian Blur right away.
- One search for everything. Every video and audio effect Premiere has, your custom presets and third-party plugins like Sapphire, BCC and Boris FX.
- Smart ranking. Your recent, favorite and most-used effects rise to the top, so it gets faster the more you edit.
- Batch apply. Select as many clips as you like and apply the effect to all of them at once.
- Custom shortcuts. Give any effect, preset or third-party plugin its own keys.
- Clean results. Hide legacy effects and anything you never touch.
- Your look, everywhere. Dark, Light or Glass with nine accent colors, saved in profiles you can take to any computer.

Step 1: Install BetterFX
Download BetterFX right after checkout, or from the link in your email. Run the installer and it sets up both the BetterFX app and the Premiere Pro plugin, so there is nothing to copy by hand.
BetterFX supports Premiere Pro 2021 to 2026 on macOS and Windows, and updates install automatically.
Step 2: Select your clips and press the shortcut
In the timeline, select one clip or several. Press Option + Space on a Mac or Alt + Space on Windows to open the search bar over your edit.
With an empty search, BetterFX shows your last five effects, newest first. Often the effect you need is already right there.
Step 3: Type a few letters and press Enter
Type part of the effect name and press Enter. The effect is applied to every selected clip, it shows up in Effect Controls, and you are back in the timeline.
That turns a long Effects panel routine into a couple of keystrokes. Our guide to applying filters to video in Premiere Pro shows what to do with the settings next.

Step 4: Let smart ranking do the work
Keep editing the way you always do. BetterFX notices which effects, presets and plugins you reach for and moves them to the top of the results.
Click the star next to an effect to pin it as a favorite. The more you edit, the fewer letters you need.

Step 5: Tune it to the way you edit
Open the BetterFX panel to make it yours. Click the shortcut field next to any effect or preset and press your keys, like Option + Shift + B for Gaussian Blur. BetterFX warns you about clashes, and your shortcuts show as tags right in the search results.
Click the eye next to effects you never use to hide them, and switch off legacy effects in one go. Save your shortcuts, favorites, hidden effects and look as a profile, then export it to set up another computer in seconds. Read the full BetterFX guide for every option.
