The short answer

Looking for an EZEdit Pro Tools alternative for Premiere Pro? Mako handles the everyday fix-ups in one click: fit a clip to the frame, strip its effects, nest, unnest and clear out empty tracks. It is free, on Mac and Windows.

No dialogs and no hunting through menus. Select, click, and the timeline is back in shape.

The one-click fix-ups

Most of an edit is small repairs: a clip that arrives the wrong size, a stack of effects that went nowhere, a group of clips that should move as one. Mako turns each of those into a single button.

  • Fit to Frame. Scales an oversized clip to fit the frame. Shift-click fills the frame instead.
  • Clear Effects. Strips every video effect off the selected clips. Motion and Opacity stay.
  • Nest. Wraps the selected clips in a nest, without a dialog.
  • Unnest. Opens a nest back up onto the timeline, in place, effects and keyframes included.
  • Delete Empty Tracks. Removes every empty track at once.
  • Adjustment Layer and Color Matte. Dropped over your selection on the first free track, cut to fit.
  • Transparency Grid. The checkerboard in the Program Monitor, on in one click.

Step 1: Get Mako for free

Add Mako to your cart and check out for $0. There is no card, no account and no license key, and your download appears right on the order confirmation page.

Open Mako.pkg on a Mac or run MakoSetup.exe on Windows, restart Premiere Pro and open Window > Extensions > Mako. It works with Premiere Pro 2021 and later.

Step 2: Fit or fill the frame

Mixed footage rarely matches your sequence. Select the clip and click Fit to Frame: Mako scales it so the whole image sits inside the frame.

Want it edge to edge with no black bars? Shift-click the same button and Mako fills the frame instead. Our guide on how to fit video to frame in Premiere Pro explains when to fit and when to fill.

Step 3: Strip a clip back to clean

Tried a blur, a black and white and a grade, and none of them worked? Select the clips and click Clear Effects. Every video effect is gone in one click.

Motion and Opacity stay where they are, so your framing and fades survive. It works on a whole selection, which makes it the fastest way to reset a scene before you start the look again.

Step 4: Nest without a dialog, unnest in place

Select a group of clips and click Nest. They are wrapped in a nest right away, with no naming dialog in the way.

When you need them back, select the nest and click Unnest. Every clip returns to its own track, in place, with its effects, keyframes, speed, names and on/off state, and linked audio stays linked.

If a clip can't be rebuilt, such as a title, a multicam clip or a time-remapped clip, Mako leaves the nest as it is. Each step can be undone.

Step 5: Clear out empty tracks

After a round of nesting and moving things around, the timeline fills up with empty tracks. Click Delete Empty Tracks and they are all removed at once.

Before you export, click QC Check too. It closes empty gaps and marks black gaps, offline media, switched-off clips and one- or two-frame clips, with the playhead on the first problem.

Why it feels like part of Premiere

Mako uses your selection and your playhead, the same way Premiere does. New layers go on the first free track above and never overwrite a clip, and adjustment layers and freeze frames land in their own Mako bin.

Every button, and each of its extra clicks, can have its own keyboard shortcut. Put Fit to Frame on one key and Fill on the next, and reframing a whole montage of vertical clips in a horizontal edit becomes a rhythm.

The panel wraps like the Tools panel, in columns when tall and rows when wide, and updates itself in the background. Our Mako walkthrough covers all 13 buttons, and you can get Mako here.
