Why BetterFX feels at home in Premiere Pro

BetterFX was built for one job: getting any effect onto your clips the moment you think of it. It works the way Premiere already works, so every effect you apply shows up in Effect Controls, ready to adjust.

  • One shortcut. Every effect. A focused search bar opens over your timeline and gets out of the way the moment you are done.
  • Type the way you think. Names, abbreviations or a few remembered letters all work. gb finds Gaussian Blur and wrp stb finds Warp Stabilizer.
  • Everything in one search. Built-in video and audio effects, your own presets and third-party effects from plugins like Sapphire and Boris FX sit side by side.
  • It learns how you edit. Your recent, favorite and most-used effects rise to the top, so search gets faster the more you edit.
  • Your own keys. Give any effect or preset a shortcut of its own and skip the search entirely.
  • Pay once. $29.99 one-time with lifetime updates, on Mac and Windows, for Premiere Pro 2021 to 2026.

Step 1: Install BetterFX

Your download is ready right after checkout and arrives by email too. Run the installer for your system and it sets up the BetterFX app and the Premiere Pro plugin together.

There is nothing to copy by hand and no other plugin to buy or install. Open Premiere Pro and you are ready to go.

Step 2: Search and apply your first effect

Select a clip in the timeline and press your BetterFX shortcut. Type lum and press Enter, and Lumetri Color appears in Effect Controls.

Select several clips first and the effect goes on all of them at once. A small tag marks third-party effects, so your Sapphire or BCC effects are easy to spot at a glance.

Step 3: Let it learn your favorites

Just keep editing. Open BetterFX with an empty search and your last five effects are waiting, newest first, so the effect you just used is one key away.

The effects you use most move up the results on their own. Click the star next to any effect to pin it as a favorite, and it stays close every time you search.

Step 4: Put your go-to effects on a key

For the effects you reach for all day, skip the search. In the BetterFX panel, click the shortcut field next to an effect or preset and press your keys, for example Option + 1 for Warp Stabilizer. BetterFX warns you if the keys clash with another shortcut.

Now select clips and press the keys, and the effect is applied. If you stabilize a lot of handheld footage, our guide to stabilizing video in Premiere Pro shows how to dial in the result.

Step 5: Make it yours

Hide the effects you never touch with one click on the eye icon, and one switch keeps Premiere's legacy copies out of your results. Then pick a Dark, Light or Glass look with one of nine accent colors.

Save it all as a profile: shortcuts, favorites, hidden effects, search settings and appearance. Export it as one small file and import it on your other computer for the exact same setup. For a tour of every setting, read our complete BetterFX guide.

Tips

  • Bring your presets. Save your own presets, keyframes included, and apply them as fast as any built-in effect.
  • One profile per client. Keep a profile for each client or type of edit and switch whenever you like.
  • See your keys as you search. Your custom shortcuts show as small tags in the results, so you learn them as you go.
