How BetterFX reads what you type

A type-to-apply tool lives or dies by its search. BetterFX is built to find effects the way you think about them, not the way they are filed in the Effects panel.

  • First letters. One or two letters are often enough to bring the right effect to the top.
  • Abbreviations. gb finds Gaussian Blur and lmc finds Lumetri Color. Skip letters or type half a word and it still finds it.
  • Picture and sound. Video and audio effects come from the same bar.
  • Everything you own. Built-in effects, your custom presets and third-party effects from plugins like Sapphire and Boris FX.
  • Smart ranking. Your recent, favorite and most-used effects rise to the top, so search gets faster the more you edit.

Step 1: Open the bar and type one letter

Install BetterFX with the guided installer for Mac or Windows. It sets up the app and the Premiere Pro plugin for you, and your download is ready right after checkout.

Select a clip, press your shortcut and type a single l. BetterFX already lists Lumetri Color, Lens Flare, Lens Distortion, Leave Color and Luma Key, with the most likely match highlighted.

Press Enter and the top result is applied, right there in Effect Controls. Add another letter or two and the list narrows to exactly what you meant.

Step 2: Type less with abbreviations

You rarely need the full name. Type w and Warp Stabilizer is already at the top. Keep typing wrp stb if you like, and it stays there.

This is where the time adds up. A few keystrokes replace opening the Effects panel, digging through folders and dragging the effect onto the clip. Once it's applied, here's how to stabilize video in Premiere Pro with the right settings.

Step 3: Find audio effects the same way

Sound fixes come from the same bar. Select a dialogue clip, type dn, and DeNoise appears under Audio Effects. Press Enter and it's on the clip.

For the cleanup itself, follow our guide to remove background noise in Premiere Pro.

Step 4: Let the ranking learn your edit

Open BetterFX with an empty search and your last five effects are waiting, newest first. Applying the same grade again is one shortcut and Enter.

The more you edit, the better it gets. BetterFX learns which effects, presets and plugins you reach for most and puts them first. Star the ones you love to pin them, and they rise to the top too.

Keep your results clean

Short searches work best when the list holds only what you use. Click the eye next to an effect you never touch and it leaves search. One switch hides Premiere's legacy copies, and you choose whether third-party effects and custom presets appear, each with an optional small tag.

Why BetterFX is the best type-to-apply tool for Premiere Pro

It does one job and does it instantly. The bar floats over your timeline, so your eyes and your pointer stay on the edit, and it stays fast in large, effect-heavy projects.

It supports Premiere Pro 2021 to 2026 on macOS and Windows, and your one-time purchase includes lifetime access, free updates that install automatically and a commercial license.

FAQ

Is there a Quick Menu alternative for Premiere Pro?

Yes. BetterFX gives you the same type-a-few-letters flow in Premiere Pro: press one shortcut, type, and press Enter to apply.

Do I have to type the full effect name?

No. Abbreviations and partial words work, so gb finds Gaussian Blur and a single w brings up Warp Stabilizer.

Can BetterFX find audio effects?

Yes. Video and audio effects share one search bar, so dn finds DeNoise just as quickly as a video effect.

Does it search third-party plugins and my own presets?

Yes. Third-party effects from plugins like Sapphire and Boris FX and your custom presets appear in the same results as Premiere's built-in effects.

How much is BetterFX?
