Mako QC Check for Premiere Pro: a timeline with gaps closed and markers over offline media and a tiny clip

The short answer

Looking for a Sequence Inspector alternative for Premiere Pro? Mako runs a QC check on your sequence in one click, closing empty gaps and marking every problem it finds, and it's free on Mac and Windows.

QC Check is one of 13 one-click tools in the Mako panel. No account, no license key and no trial.

What QC Check looks for

The last pass before export is where small mistakes hide: a flash of black, a clip someone switched off, a missing file. QC Check finds them for you. First it closes gaps where nothing is on any track. Then it marks what's left with colored markers on the timeline:

  • Red for black gaps.
  • Orange for offline media.
  • Yellow for switched-off clips.
  • Purple for tiny one- or two-frame clips.

The playhead jumps to the first problem, so you can start fixing right away.

Step 1: Install Mako

Add Mako to your cart and check out for $0. No card is needed. Your download appears on the order confirmation page, and we email you the link.

Open Mako.pkg on a Mac, or run MakoSetup.exe from the zip on Windows. Restart Premiere Pro, open Window > Extensions > Mako and dock the panel. Mako supports Premiere Pro 2021 and later.

Step 2: Run QC Check on the finished cut

Open the sequence you're about to deliver and click QC Check. There is nothing to configure first. Mako looks through the whole timeline in one go.

Here the timeline has an empty gap after the interview and a clip whose media is offline. Both would slip into an export if nobody looked closely.

Step 3: Follow the markers

After the check, the empty gap is closed and the remaining problems carry colored markers. The playhead is already parked on the first one.

Fix each one and move to the next marker. If the orange marker points to missing files, see how to fix media offline in Premiere Pro. When everything is clean, Shift-click QC Check to clear the markers it added.

Step 4: Choose fix or mark only

Some editors want the gaps closed for them. Others want to see every issue and decide by hand. Mako does both.

Open Settings (the gear) and go to Options. With Fix problems automatically on, QC Check closes empty gaps by itself and marks what it can't fix. Turn it off and QC Check only adds markers, leaving your timeline exactly as it is.

Step 5: Clean up with Delete Empty Tracks

A finished timeline often has leftover tracks with nothing on them. Click Delete Empty Tracks and every empty track is removed at once, with no dialog.

The sequence you hand off is neat and easy to read for the next editor, the colorist or the client.

A pre-export routine in a few clicks

Put the whole check on your keyboard and it takes seconds. Right-click any Mako button and choose Keyboard Shortcut, or set them all on the Shortcuts tab in Settings.

  • QC Check to close gaps and mark problems.
  • Transparency Grid to check logos and cutouts on the checkerboard in the Program Monitor.
  • Clear Effects to strip leftover video effects off a clip and start clean.
  • Delete Empty Tracks to tidy the sequence.

Then export with confidence. Our guide to the best export settings in Premiere Pro covers the last step, and the complete Mako guide covers every button in the panel.
